Movie + Karaoke Night: The Last Five Years (live from Southwark)
Let's watch a gorgeous underrated musical and sing some (unrelated) karaoke. More about the show below.
7:00-8:30: Karaoke and hangs
8:30-10:00: The Last Five Years
The show: The Last Five Years tells the story of an ambitious creative couple in New York City coming together and falling apart. We alternate between scenes from her perspective—moving backwards in time from collapse—and his—moving forward in time from infatuation. Music, lyrics, and (semi-autobiographical) book by my favorite living theater composer, Jason Robert Brown. It's a great score.
The production: We'll be watching a 2021 London production that has a really interesting twist: the stars of the show are pianists, and they accompany each other on-stage. Piano is the "main character" for most of this score, so I think having the actors play that part will create a powerful effect.
Here's a trailer and a review.
This is a lazy weeknight event, so BYO-snacks-and-drinks if you'd like some. If you're weepy, be warned—I haven't seen this production, but others have always wrecked me.
