About Kampong Collective

New Nonprofit Kampong Collective Debuts Immersive Southeast Asian Storytelling Festival Inside Bay Area’s Largest Asian Food Weekend

One ticket unlocks an original 20-minute play with story-inspired food tastings, a participatory cultural village, and two additional major Asian festivals—August 15–16 at San Mateo Event Center

SAN MATEO, Calif. and LOS ANGELES, August 7, 2026 — Kampong Collective, a new U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit, today launched with Spice & Story, an immersive Southeast Asian cultural experience designed to move beyond typical food festivals and vendor halls. The two-day event runs August 15–16 at the San Mateo Event Center and gives every ticket holder access to three co-located festivals expected to draw more than 20,000 people.

Southeast Asian communities now number more than 8 million people in the United States, yet their stories, creativity, and everyday traditions remain largely invisible to mainstream audiences. Spice & Story is built to change that. Visitors experience an original 20-minute immersive play, Kampong Kopi, USA, paired with story-inspired food tastings, then step into Kampong Gallery—a living village of art, makers, games, founders, and community partners.

Why this matters now Most Asian-oriented events in the Bay Area celebrate pan-Asian food and performance. Spice & Story is deliberately different. It focuses specifically on the 11 countries of Southeast Asia—Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam—and centers storytelling, belonging, and participation rather than passive consumption. Guests do not simply watch or eat; they enter the story, make something with their hands, meet founders, and leave with a stamped passport of experiences.

The organization takes its name from the kampong—the traditional Southeast Asian village where doors stayed open, meals were shared, and neighbors looked after one another. “The kampong was never just a place. It was a way of showing up for one another,” said Sharon Sim, Co-President of Kampong Collective. “We believe Southeast Asian stories belong in the broader fabric of America, not only in our enclaves. Spice & Story is where that begins.”

What attendees actually receive One ticket delivers three distinct experiences:

  • Kampong Kopi, USA: An original 20-minute immersive play exploring home, identity, and belonging, followed by story-inspired food tastings.

  • Kampong Gallery: Seven participatory zones including Art Walk (co-hosted with Artvocate), Founders’ Corner, hands-on makers workshops (batik, wood-block printing), cultural games and dress-up, community partner connections, a marketplace of Southeast Asian makers, and a passport challenge with prizes.

  • Full access to the West Coast Asian Foodie Festival and the USA Asian Culture & Food Expo at the same venue—no extra cost.

Discounted community tickets for the Gallery Experience start at $12. The Full Experience (play + tastings + Gallery) starts at $25. Tickets are available at kampongcollective.ticketspice.com/spice-and-story.

Founders’ Corner Co-hosted with Pitch Global and Silicon Valley Access, Founders’ Corner invites startups of any background with an interest in Southeast Asia to apply at no cost. Selected founders receive mentoring, investor access, and a live pitch opportunity during the weekend. This element distinguishes Spice & Story from pure cultural festivals and creates a direct bridge between Southeast Asian creativity and the Silicon Valley ecosystem.

Kampong Collective grew directly from the momentum of Singapore Festival 2025 (hosted by SingaporeConnect), which drew more than 3,300 attendees. The new organization expands that energy across the wider Southeast Asian region while remaining rooted in the same community-driven spirit.

Lead sponsor Singapore Global Network and Festival Host Partner OMG Group make the weekend possible, alongside partners including SingaporeConnect, Pitch Global, Silicon Valley Access, Live Stage Productions, Artvocate, iR!DESCENT Batik Studio, Dabao Singapore, and others.

“When I cook Southeast Asian food, I’m not just following a recipe—I’m telling a story about where I come from,” said Tabitha Chee, Co-President. “Spice & Story invites people to sit at that table with us.”
