Author Talk: On the Black Panther Party with Dr. Robyn Spencer
The Revolution Has Come: In Conversation with Dr. Robyn C. Spencer
Lit Club NYC is honored to host a special author conversation with historian Dr. Robyn C. Spencer, centered on her acclaimed book The Revolution Has Come: Black Power, Gender, and the Black Panther Party in Oakland.
Drawing on interviews with rank-and-file members, archival research, and FBI files, Spencer reframes the Black Panther Party not as a top-down movement driven solely by its leaders, but as a living, evolving organization shaped by hundreds of young people coming into political consciousness. Her work illuminates the Party’s internal debates, its responses to state repression, and the often-overlooked roles of women in shaping its ideology, programs, and legacy.
Together, we’ll explore questions such as:
How did everyday members shape the vision and contradictions of the Black Panther Party?
What role did gender politics play within the movement—and how were women central to its survival and critique?
How do movements evolve under surveillance, repression, and internal tension?
What does the Panthers’ history reveal about power, organizing, and self-determination today?
Expect a thoughtful, historically grounded discussion with space for audience engagement, questions and reflection.
This event is hosted in partnership with Outlandish, Brooklyn's first hiking store with a mission to help people reconnect with nature.
