Dhamma Foundations: Kālāma Sutta, Five Precepts & Jīvadāna
Triple Wisdom Online Wednesday Series: Buddhadhamma
Dhamma Foundations: Kālāma Sutta, Five Precepts & Jīvadāna
In this series on foundational teachings, we will review the Kesamuti Sutta, also known as Kālāma Sutta. This is a very popular sutta, especially in the west, with a section which discusses the Buddha’s advice on how to be discerning. The sutta also highlights important aspects of the teachings – the two other sections of the sutta, often overlooked, provide great insight and value of which we will hear in detail.
Then, we will look at Brahmacariyogadha Sutta which discusses the point of the path of practice. From there, we will discuss the Five Precepts in-depth, focusing on a famous story about these five relatives who receive instructions from a reusi on the five precepts. We will receive detailed instructions on the five precepts, how to cultivate and practice them well to support all of our endeavors.
We will end this series with a discussion on Jīvadāna, the Buddhist practice of releasing the lives of animals scheduled to die. This topic will cover how Jīvidāna can be practiced, used for those who are dying, the living, the sick and how it can be used to extend one’s life. This teaching is shared in preparation for the first annual Life Release Day (July 29th, 2026) where we invite anyone around the world to donate towards or participate in releasing a life safely and intentionally. More information will be announced in the newsletter soon.
