HYPERGAMY

​We’re backkkkkk!

​For this Candour session, we’ll be thinking about hypergamy, class, and the growing impulse to put a price on access when it comes to dating and sex. As dating standards get more strict, folks are broker than ever. Sexual/romantic access should be earned, but at what cost? Who gets to be selective, who is expected to prove their worth, and what does it mean when desire becomes entangled with status, money, and social mobility?

​We’ll be reading “Hypergamy and Its Inherent Contradictions” by T. Mohanadoss, which examines the tensions and contradictions within the practice of hypergamy and the social hierarchies that shape who is considered a desirable partner. Alongside this, we’ll read R. Claire Snyder-Hall’s “Third-Wave Feminism and the Defense of ‘Choice’,” which asks us to think critically about feminist ideas of choice and agency. Together, the texts give us a way into questions about whether our romantic and sexual choices are truly individual, or whether they are shaped by the economic, gendered, and social structures surrounding us.
