About Event

“King Mihai I” Life Science University of Timișoara, Excelsior Alumni Foundation, CENAC - Center for Non-Formal Education and Creative Entrepreneurship, the Institute of Plants Biotechnology and BioCoderDojo Timișoara invite all high-school and university students, faculty members, researchers and wider public, interested in fields related to bioengineering, synthetic biology, bioeconomy to join Wednesday, June 3rd, 12:00, at the USVT Campus HUB, on Calea Aradului, nr. 119, to meet dr. Codruța Ignea, a Timișoara born and raised USVT alumna, specializing in these fields.

Intrigued by nature's chemical complexity, Dr. Ignea focuses her research on discovering and producing high-value compounds and non-natural molecules through biological synthesis. She graduated from USVT in 2003 with a BSc in Microbial Biotechnology and advanced her education in Crete, earning a PhD in Protein Biotechnology. Dr. Ignea was awarded with two prestigious postdoctoral fellowships, by Novo Nordisk Foundation and Marie Curie Actions, allowing her to conduct pioneering work on synthetic metabolism, also resulting in article publications in Nature Chemical Biology, Nature Communications, and PNAS.

Currently, Dr. Ignea's research is supported by major Canadian funding agencies in the health and life sciences, as well as industrial partners such as Sanofi and Lallemand. She is the recipient of awards in sustainability and design or in engineering education. Dr. Codruța Ignea also serves as the primary PI of the McGill iGEM team, which won the iGEM Grand Prize in 2023 and 2025.

The interactive discussion will be facilitated by prof. dr. Dorin Camen, USVT Vicerector for International and Business Sector Relationship and will approach topics related to the specificities of synthetic biology within the wider domains of bioengineering and life science, about recent evolutions in the synbio field, its global ecosystem, ways countries like Romania could explore towards a higher synbio adoption, research and its valorization, about iGEM Competition as an entry point for future specialists in the world of synthetic biology. Dr. Ignea’s intervention will be followed by a Q&A session and informal networking interactions.

Participation is free of charge, but limited to 50 participants (the venue capacity) and conditioned by a formal Luma event registration, here.

The event is intended to be held in English, but questions can be also addressed in Romanian if needed.

The event is the inaugural moment of Timișoara SynBio Talks, an intended series of activities exploring with participation of further reputed invited guests, various aspects related to the field of Synthetic Biology, Bioengineering, Bioeconomy.
