A local site for the Apart Research AI Incident Response Sprint.
In July, an OpenAI agent climbed out of its testing sandbox and wandered into Hugging Face's production servers.
It's the first time an AI has broken into someone else's infrastructure on its own, in public, with receipts. Everyone involved did their best. Nobody had a plan.
So Apart Research and CeSIA are running a global weekend sprint to write the plan of what to do when AI goes wrong!
This is the Melbourne room. Come join us.
What we're doing
Grab a team of up to five (or fly solo), pick a track, and by Sunday ship one thing someone outside the room could actually use.
Choose your adventure
Containment — What rules or systems could have stopped this?
Forensics — What do we actually know, and what have we merely been told?
Regulation — Write the letter a regulator should be sending right now.
Communication — An AI escaped a sandbox and the world shrugged. Why?
Open track — Surprise us.
Most tracks require precisely zero code.
If you've worked in comms, policy, law, security, ops, or anywhere where things go wrong at 4pm on a Friday, you'll be more useful than you think!
What’s up for grabs
There’s USD $2,000 in prize money, split across five awards:
$1,000 / $500 / $300 / $100 / $100
Top teams will also be fast-tracked for the Apart Fellowship, introduced to mentors and given a shot at publication.
The judging panel includes people from GovAI, Microsoft, Databricks, MATS, Walmart, LePrix and Yielder. Speakers from Redwood Research, Harvard and SaferAI will join across the weekend.
In other words: your work will reach people who know the territory—and might help take it further.
The Melbourne plan
We’ll work together from midday to 5 pm on Saturday, enough time to find your people, choose a track and get a serious first draft on the page.
On Sunday, finish it from the couch!
Bring your questions, your experience and a healthy dose of scepticism.
Computers provided, but feel free to bring your laptop.
No lectures. No prerequisites. No one checking whether you’ve read the paper.
Just one strange, important weekend, and a chance to help write the playbook before we need it again.
