Join MCBcDNA for a conversation with David Schaffer, Director of QB3 and the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, an innovation center and life science incubator at UC Berkeley.
David earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT before joining the Salk Institute as a postdoctoral fellow and coming to UC Berkeley in 1999. His research has focused on engineering viral vectors and stem cells for gene and cell therapies, leading to more than 50 patents and the founding of biotech companies including 4D Molecular Therapeutics, Ignite Immunotherapies, and Rewrite Therapeutics.
Today, David leads QB3 and the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, helping connect academic research with entrepreneurship and biotechnology. In this conversation, we'll talk about his path from engineer to scientist and biotech founder, what it takes to translate breakthrough biology into companies and therapies, and the future of Berkeley's life science ecosystem.
