Moms Feel the Squeeze
Every time we check out at the grocery store, open a utility bill, fill the gas tank, or pay for health care and child care, or even look at our own impossible calendars, we feel it: Moms are being squeezed to the breaking point.
Here’s the weird thing. Well, maybe not so weird. History shows us that building power for much-needed solutions is often created one conversation at a time.
We can’t make lemonade out of this total lemon of an affordability crisis; but we can work together to fix it. And all of us are needed because the affordability crisis is all too real:
Childcare costs more than college.
Less than half of Americans can afford health care
We are one of only 6 nations on planet earth without paid family and medical leave.
Elder care, disability care, home- and community-based services are too often out of reach.
Care workers aren’t paid living wages.
Moms are beyond squished. But instead of easing the burden, Republican leaders in Congress triggered a nationwide health care crisis by slashing $1 trillion from Medicaid in their 2025 reconciliation bill and failing to extend the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits. Then, instead of fixing the crisis they created, in June the Republican-controlled Congress passed another reconciliation bill that, along with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, poured more than $240 billion into militarized immigration enforcement without guardrails to protect our communities – while ignoring the financial realities facing America’s families.
It doesn’t have to be this way!!
One glass of lemonade at a time, we can build power to move our country in a better, more affordable direction simply by having fun, sipping lemonade with a friend or two, sharing how we’re each squished by the high costs of, well, everything. And maybe even writing a postcard to Congress telling them to get their priorities in order.
