New York Affordable Housing Forum

An evening with Ahmed Tigani, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Buildings, and the developers and architects building the city's affordable housing.

We are honored to bring New York City's Buildings Commissioner to IE New York College. On Thursday, November 12, the IENYC Real Estate Club hosts the New York Affordable Housing Forum in SoHo: a panel with the people permitting, developing, and designing the city's affordable housing.

  • Ahmed Tigani: Commissioner, New York City Department of Buildings

  • Lawrence Bremer: Senior Vice President of Development, The Moinian Group

  • Pablo Choclin: Associate Principal, Aufgang Architects

  • Juan Barahona: Principal, SMJ Development

The event will be moderated by Dr. Johnny Din, CEO of Cycamore Capital and Program Director of the M.S. in Real Estate Development & Investment at IE New York College.

Every new building in New York passes through the Department of Buildings. As the city's 27th Buildings Commissioner, Ahmed Tigani leads the agency that reviews and approves building plans, issues construction permits, conducts inspections, and enforces the Construction Codes, Zoning Resolution, and Multiple Dwelling Law across nearly 1.1 million buildings. Before that, he held several senior roles at the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, most recently as Acting Commissioner.

This session brings together the agency that approves New York's buildings with the developers who deliver them and the architects who design them, to examine which approaches will create lasting solutions to the city's housing shortage.

Alongside the Commissioner, our speakers will share their firsthand experience, from converting 17 Battery Place into apartments with permanently affordable units to designing supportive housing in the Bronx and Haverstraw and developing 120 affordable homes in Rego Park, addressing the critical questions of where the biggest barriers lie today and where policy and practice can make a measurable difference.
