About Event

Part 2 in our online workshop series for music tech startups, 'From Garage Band to Global Brand', in partnership with Russells

In the second of MTUK’s 2025 autumn online workshop series with Associate Member Russells, Russells will be speaking with James Morrison, Co-Founder and CEO of Planet Fans, about his experience building a music technology start-up that processes large amounts of data, and the challenges he faced along the way. This session will provide sector-specific insights and technical suggestions to help music tech startups navigate the notoriously tricky world of collecting, processing and sharing data.

By talking through James’ journey in founding through to scaling Planet Fans, this interactive webinar will address a number of different questions that we commonly see technology start-ups consider when processing different types of data, including:

  • Why should we be thinking about how data is being collected and managed?

  • How can we approach data privacy compliance in a pragmatic way?

  • How can investing in data privacy compliance add value to our business and commercial proposition?

  • How can we scale our approach to processing data as our business grows?

  • What do businesses commonly fall down on in relation to data / why is it important to get this right?

Russells is a leading law firm in the entertainment industry, particularly in relation to music.  Russells’ team includes specialist lawyers focused on the convergence of music and technology, advising startups, technology companies, media organisations and talent on a full range of corporate, commercial, IP, regulatory and contentious matters.

Planet's platform and community management service powers customised hubs and membership passes for artists and venues, prioritising and rewarding the fans that show up again and again in real life. Providing the tools to build engaged live audiences at scale, ensuring as many fans as possible are recognised and rewarded right through from getting tickets, going to the show, and beyond, creating longer lasting relationships with these audiences.
