The Journey to Motherhood: An Interactive Case Study on Trauma-Informed Care

Even the most caring health or mental health providers can find themselves unsure what to say, how to respond, or what will feel most supportive during some of the most vulnerable moments in a woman or birthing person’s life.

In this interactive workshop, participants will step into real-life scenarios from infertility, pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood and vote in real time on how they might respond. Together, we’ll unpack the responses, reveal what actually happened in each scenario, and explore what trauma-informed care can look like in these moments. You’ll leave with practical ways to respond and greater confidence supporting the people in your care.

⚠️ Content Warning: This workshop includes sensitive content surrounding topics of sexual trauma, infertility, and birth trauma.

✨ [ABOUT THE PRESENTER] ✨

Liz Gray, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified EMDR Therapist, Clinical Supervisor, Infertility Warrior, and Trauma Survivor. She earned her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and her Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Liz is the co-founder of Maternal Trauma Support and founder of Liz Gray Consulting.

While undergoing IUI treatment in 2022 and IVF in 2023, Liz – an experienced trauma clinician herself – recognized that if she was receiving insensitive and, at times, harmful care, many others were likely experiencing the same. Navigating her own infertility journey as a sexual trauma survivor "fueled the fire" to create the Trauma-Informed Maternal Health Directory, which launched in March 2024, just one month before she gave birth. Liz's lived experience continues to inform her clinical practice, leadership, and advocacy work. Liz lives in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, IL with her husband, their mini goldendoodle, and their 2-year-old son, who was conceived via IVF.
