Reed Circuit
Reed Circuit
For nearly a decade, Merlyn Kotljar has been documenting the songs of the Blyth's reed warbler, a species whose intricate vocalizations rival those of any celebrated songbird. "Reed Circuit" puts that archive to work.
In this performance, David Rothenberg plays bass clarinet alongside an AI agent trained on Kotjar's recordings, and the two do what birds in the wild do: listen, adapt, and converge toward a shared repertoire. What begins as a duet between strangers becomes, over the course of the performance, something closer to a dialect—a musical map negotiated in real time between a human and a machine, modeled on the dynamics of avian communication.
Led By: Mason Youngblood, Merlyn Kotjar, and David Rothenberg
