The War on Protest
From Columbia's Gaza encampments to January 6th at the Capitol, from ICE facility blockades to the Minneapolis uprising after George Floyd's killing, Americans are deeply divided on when protest is legitimate and when it goes too far. We celebrate disruptive movements in hindsight—the suffragettes, the Freedom Riders—but in the moment, we're often split on whether today's protesters are heroes or lawbreakers. So what actually makes a protest justified? Does property destruction delegitimize a cause? Does the righteousness of the message excuse the methods? And do we apply our standards consistently, or only when we agree with the protesters?
Join us for a conversation that cuts across partisan reflexes. We'll challenge you to defend disruption for causes you oppose and demand order for ones you support. If you've ever noticed your principles shifting depending on whose flag is being waved, this one's for you.
