Civic Saturday 12/5: Common Story
Our civic values and virtues are rooted in our stories.
In this fragmented and perplexing attentional environment, how do we make sense of our past to write a new story?
Join us for this final gathering of the year, generously hosted by KPBS, as we explore the theme: COMMON STORY. Together, we will dive into the complexities of the American narrative, navigate the ongoing battles over our history, and examine how storytelling, empathy, and deep listening can heal division and revive our civic culture.
Civic Saturday is a gathering of friends and strangers to connect around the values and practices of being an active citizen, reckon with our shared truths, and create new rituals that are joyful and communal. At Civic Saturday, we sing, hear poetry, engage in civic readings, and listen to a “civic sermon”—followed by conversations designed to help us rehumanize our politics.
Civic Saturday is sponsored through the OneSD Initiative and the Nonprofit Institute at USD, with support from individual civic leaders and host venues. Grounded in the practices at Citizen University, we gather to help one another live like citizens, broadly defined and expressed in this equation: POWER + CHARACTER = CITIZENSHIP.
