Travel to Niigata With Us:A Sharing Talk about Izumozaki and Tsunan

​Hi, I’m Janice from Keio Media Design!

​Have you ever experienced sitting beside the Sea of Japan, enjoying the rising heat of a sauna while watching the sunset slowly disappear into the horizon? Or harvesting more than 40 carrots from deep snow with a group of newly met friends, then eating them raw together with residents while chatting over drinks?

​These are just some of my memories from Niigata.

​From summer to winter to spring, my research has brought me repeatedly to the towns of Izumozaki (出雲崎) and Tsunan (津南). When I think of Niigata now, I no longer think only of rice, sake, or snow, but also of the warmth and textures of nature, local life, and the people I encountered there.

​These small towns are filled with fascinating stories that are still waiting to be discovered.

​My research involves organizing student trips to these regions, where we collaboratively discuss and engage with local tourism challenges. Through this process, we also co-create media outputs such as zines, photographs, and videos. In this event, I hope to introduce both the progress of my research and the charm of these towns through these co-created works.

​The first 30–40 minutes of the event will be an English sharing session. After that, there will be a board game experience created by another traveler in collaboration with Tsunan Town. You will be invited to join the game in groups. The activity will mainly be conducted in Japanese, but the cards include English support. Participation is completely optional!

​みなさんは、日本海のそばで、サウナの熱気に包まれながら夕日が海に沈んでいく景色を眺めたことがありますか？あるいは、初めて出会った仲間たちと一緒に、深い雪の中から40本以上のにんじんを掘り出し、地元の方々とお酒を飲みながら生でかじって語り合ったことはありますか？

​これらは、私が新潟で過ごした思い出のほんの一部です。

​夏から冬、そして春へと、研究を通して私は何度も出雲崎町や津南町を訪れてきました。今の私にとって新潟は、米・酒・雪だけではなく、自然や人とのつながり、そして地域の暮らしの温度や質感を思い出させてくれる場所になっています。

​こうした小さな町には、まだ知られていない魅力的な物語がたくさんあります。

​私の研究では、学生たちと一緒に地域を訪れ、観光課題について考えたり、地域の方々と関わりながら取り組みを行っています。また、その過程で zine や写真、映像なども制作してきました。今回のイベントでは、そうした共創の成果物を通して、研究内容や町の魅力をご紹介できればと思っています。

​イベント前半の30〜40分ほどは、英語でのトークセッションを予定しています。後半では、津南町と協力して制作した、町をテーマにしたボードゲーム体験も行います。会場で参加希望者を募ってグループに分かれて遊ぶ予定です。進行は日本語中心ですが、カードには英語サポートもあるので、参加は自由です！
