The Nuclear Fuel Cycle

We learned how a nuclear reactor works. Now, let’s follow the fuel.

For our second Firefly Reading Circle, we’ll trace the nuclear fuel cycle from uranium ore to reactor fuel, through the reactor, and into the world of spent fuel, reprocessing, and waste.

Along the way, we’ll explore some deceptively simple questions: Why does uranium need to be enriched? What actually happens to fuel inside a reactor? Is spent fuel really “waste”? And why has India built its nuclear programme around a closed fuel cycle and, ultimately, thorium?

As before, this isn’t a lecture or a networking event. We’ll do a short reading beforehand, then spend the hour working through the concepts together.

No nuclear engineering degree required. Just curiosity, a willingness to read, and being earnest.

Limited capacity, so sign up when you see this. Looking forward!
