Documentary screening and discussion: an insight into how UK aid cuts are impacting women and children
Please join us for a special parliamentary screening of A Matter of Life or Death: Giving Birth in Sierra Leone, a 13-minute film for Channel 4 News, made by On Our Radar and independent, women-focused newsroom Fuller.
Sierra Leone was known as one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth. The country has made steady progress over the past decade, but that progress is now under threat.
Filmed on the frontlines of care, the documentary captures the lived realities of women and health workers navigating life-and-death moments as resources dry up. It offers a rare and intimate glimpse into how UK aid cuts have impacted the largest maternity and newborn hospitals in Sierra Leone, one of the countries most impacted by aid cuts.
The screening will be followed by an informal discussion with filmmakers and people working on the frontline, including special guest Dr Mustapha S Kabba, deputy chief medical officer at the Ministry of Health, who will be visiting from Sierra Leone.
Join us as we ask: what's next for maternal and child health funding? What lessons must be learned? Who is filling in the gaps, what role should the UK be playing and how can local agency to sustain fragile health systems be better supported?
We look forward to seeing you on 2 July.
