The (Deeply Misunderstood) Evolutionary Science of Attraction
💘 What if everything evolutionary psychology told you about dating was wrong?
For decades, a buzzy branch of science has spread a deeply flawed story about romantic relationships, cloaking itself in the language of incontrovertible Darwinian fact. Evolutionary psychology claims our minds were shaped by primal drives that pit the genders against each other, from the myth that men are wired to be promiscuous to the notion that wealth, status, and beauty are the ultimate aphrodisiacs.
In this talk, UC Davis psychology professor Paul Eastwick, author of Bonded by Evolution and co-host of the Love Factually podcast, draws on original experiments from his own lab to reveal that these stories bear little resemblance to how attraction really works. Success in relationships does not hinge on finding the universally good partner, he argues, but on compatibility.
Popularity may shape first impressions, but its influence fades fast. And once we look at what men and women actually want, the supposed gender differences tend to evaporate. Eastwick reveals attraction as a process of finding, and often creating, a compatible connection. 💫

There's no parking on-site, so we recommend street parking or using public transportation.

No :) This venue is open to all ages. If you'd like to purchase alcohol, you must be 21+ and present a valid ID.
Will this event be photographed or recorded?

The lecture is sold out! Can I join a waitlist?
Unfortunately, Luma does NOT support waitlists for paid events yet. We recommend checking back on the event site the day before / the day of the event! Attendees are likely to drop out.
What about refunds?
You can refund your ticket up to 24 hours before the event starts. Since this is a limited-space event, we encourage you to update your RSVP if you can’t make it—this helps us keep spots open for others. NOTE - you do NOT need to email us for a refund, we will issue one within 48 hours upon changing your RSVP to "Not Going" :)
What about the ticket structure?
We’re proud to pay all of our incredible venues and hardworking speakers, and the rest supports the Big Brain team so we can keep bringing community lectures to the Bay Area.
