AN EVENING IN SUPPORT OF BULGARIA’S FIRST MUSEUM OF COMMUNISM
More than 35 years after the fall of communism, Bulgaria still has no museum dedicated to confronting the repression and resistance, but also the choices, compromises and everyday lives shaped by Bulgaria’s communist regime. As the generation that lived through this communist period grows older, the time to preserve their stories is narrowing.
Sofia Platform Foundation is taking on this task.
Join us at the Victims of Communism Museum in Washington, D.C., for a private fundraising evening in support of FACADE – Bulgaria’s first museum dedicated to the history and legacy of communism.

The program will open with brief welcome remarks from the Victims of Communism Museum.
Louisa Slavkova, founder and co-director of Sofia Platform Foundation, will present the vision for the museum and the work already underway. The project will unfold in two connected formats: a mobile museum on a bus, launching in Sofia in spring 2027, and a permanent museum planned to open on November 10, 2028, the anniversary of the fall of communism.
Working under the title FACADE, the museum will explore the tension between the regime’s promises and people’s lived reality, as well as the different ways in which Bulgaria’s communist history is remembered and recounted today.
Following the short program, guests are invited to continue the evening with an open conversation about Bulgaria, historical memory, and the country’s democratic future.
This is a fundraising event, and guests will be invited to consider supporting the museum.
Supporting the museum
Contributions will support the project in its entirety— from the mobile museum housed in a converted bus to the development and opening of the permanent museum. This includes research and the collection of materials; curatorial and architectural development; exhibitions and digital content; educational and public programs; and the technical and spatial realization of both museum formats.
