I guess Hoppin' John is a southern thing, but my family used to make black eyed peas and ham hocks for New Year's. After a honeymoon in New Orleans, I got addicted to red beans and rice, so I changed it up, and I've done this for 35 years.
Bring beer, traditionally I've used PBR because it's an ingredient in my beans, but anything will do.
