About Event

We know that the UK is facing a housing crisis. At the sharp end of this are Black and racially minoritised communities - facing huge struggles to gain safe, secure, decent homes.

We need to think about how racial injustices are structured into these systems. Why is that 10% of Black families gained social housing through the statutory homelessness system, compared to 24% of white families?

In Okun’s second online forum, we will think about how to achieve housing & land justice through a Community Wealth Building (CWB) model. We will be thinking about how racial justice relates to:

  • housing affordability

  • community land trusts

  • land ownership reform

  • tackling gentrification

  • community ownership over land

  • housing / land asset transfers

  • access to growing space

Agenda:

  • Presentation (15 mins) - What do we mean by housing and land justice?

  • Breakout group discussion (20 mins) - What racial injustices exist within our current housing and land distribution system?

  • Breakout group discussion (20 mins) - What solutions & policies would address these racial injustices, following an understanding of community wealth building?

  • Breakout group discussion (20 mins) - What evidence do we have to support these proposed solutions?

  • Feedback to main group (10 mins): Feedback on main topics of discussion.

This meeting will introduce the topic. In parallel, we will open a shared Miro online board. This tool will give our members time and space to collectively workshop, edit and co-produce robust policy recommendations.

We are looking to build a truly democratic policy forum. Please do invite members of your wider networks to join these online meetings and the Miro workboard.

Going forward, Okun will host an online meeting and a online Miro board to address each of the other policy areas.

July 16th: Health equity and wellbeing - community-led health models, preventative health, social wellbeing

August 13th: Democratic participation and community power - civic participation, democratic reform, devolution

September 17th: Education, skills, and employment - community-led education programmes, access to training and skills, non-exploitative employment

You are encouraged to join the meeting and Miro board for the policy areas you have particular experience, knowledge or interest in, but you are not expected to join every meeting.
