What makes life meaningful?
We often measure life by what it produces: the work we do, the status we earn, and the things we achieve.
But how much do they tell us about whether a life is meaningful? And where else might we find meaning beyond what we achieve?
Get ready to unravel your thoughts with Matthew Hammerton.
An Associate Professor of Philosophy at Singapore Management University, Matthew explores what makes a life good, meaningful, and worth living. His work spans ethics, happiness, sacrifice, achievement, luck, and the philosophy of work. He is currently writing a public philosophy paper about work, meaning, and identity inspired by Wim Wenders' Perfect Days.
An evening when slow bar meets reality check, we'll explore four places we might find meaning in life: work, leisure, self-enrichment, and relationships. What makes each worthwhile? Equal parts sharing, discussion, and the occasional “wow… that's meaningful!”.
The Space: EarlyAfter (EA)
Set beside New Bahru, EA is a Singaporean-owned café and cocktail bar co-founded by former nurse Vivien & Irene, conceived as a space for pause, connection, and recovery through food and presence.

Bring your listening ears, opinions, and sense of humour. We'll provide the space, the vibes, and research on a corner of the world.
