About Event

Join the SMASH High School AI Hackathon!

We're looking for operations volunteers to help with event execution as well as technical mentors to hep the student teams for the 2024 SMASH Youth AI Hackathon in Atlanta.

Metro Atlanta high school students are in for an electrifying hackathon with SMASH! On October 19, they'll dive into a dynamic day where creativity and tech collide. They'll collaborate with fellow innovators and industry mentors to learn the basics of AI.

Why Volunteer

1. Mentor the Next Generation of Innovators

  • Share knowledge, expertise, and experience to help high school and college students grow as problem-solvers and innovators in the field of AI.

  • Provide guidance on how to navigate technical challenges, brainstorm ideas, and build creative solutions.

2. Contribute to the Growth of STEM Fields

  • Support the broader mission of promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education among students.

  • Help encourage more students, especially underrepresented groups, to pursue careers in technology and AI.

3. Give Back to the Community

  • Volunteering is a way to give back by contributing to educational events that inspire creativity and technical growth.

  • By helping out, you play a role in creating opportunities for young people to explore technology in a meaningful way.

4. Network with Like-Minded Professionals

  • Volunteering at a hackathon brings together professionals from various industries and disciplines, offering opportunities to network and collaborate with others passionate about technology, education, and mentorship.

  • Build new professional relationships with fellow volunteers, mentors, and even event sponsors or organizers.

5. Support Ethical AI Development

  • Volunteers can help emphasize the importance of ethical AI practices, encouraging students to consider the societal impact of their projects and to adopt responsible AI development methods from the start.

By signing up as a volunteer, you'll make a lasting impact on the students, contribute to the future of AI, and enrich their own lives with new experiences and connections.

Register today. SMASH is committed to building a diverse and socially conscious tech workforce. Be part of a day of innovation, collaboration, and impact!"

About SMASH

SMASH was one of the earliest STEM education programs created in the United States as a way to prepare students of color for Computer Science college studies. The very first SMASH site program launched on the University of California, Berkeley campus in 2004, but it follows a decades long legacy of diversity and inclusion advocacy by our founder, Dr. Freada Kapor Klein.

At SMASH, we aim to build a strong, diverse, and socially conscious tech workforce by leveling the playing field through academic learning and experiential engagement for high school and college students.

We empower dedicated students of color in computer science fields through intensive education, culturally relevant coursework, and access to resources, aiming to cultivate success in college and careers. Our vision is to create a Computer Science ecosystem where every student, regardless of their zip code, can thrive in the global economy. By providing equitable opportunities, we seek to enrich our communities and workplaces with well-prepared, competitive leaders representing broad perspectives and sectors of society.
