AI will change how people and institutions work out what to believe, decide what to do, and coordinate. These tools could make complex situations far easier to understand, or they could concentrate decision-making power and deepen dependence on systems nobody can evaluate. Over one weekend, we'll build the benchmarks, verification signals and products that push it the right way.

This is the Saarbrücken in-person hub for the AI x Epistemics Research Sprint, a global 3-day research sprint by Apart Research. Join us to work through the weekend alongside other participants in Saarland instead of alone at home. The wider sprint runs online, with local hubs around the world.

When: Friday, 13 November – Sunday, 15 November 2026 Submissions close Sunday 15 November, 11:59 PM Anywhere on Earth. Where: details to be sent to registered participants.

What you'll do

You'll form a team (1–5 people, or solo) and produce a short research report, optionally with code and a demo, on an open problem in AI for epistemics. Four tracks to anchor your project:

  1. Model Epistemics & Decision-Making Evals — does a model know how solid its claims are? Measure calibration, overselling, flip-flopping under pushback, and benchmarks that stay meaningful over time.

  2. Trust Infrastructure — source-reliability scoring, provenance, and tamper-evident records of what AI agents did, built so both people and machines can use them.

  3. Epistemic Products — tools that actually improve the decisions people make, such as decision briefings, dispute de-escalation, and crux mapping.

  4. Open Track — deployment, adoption and impact, or bring your own angle.

Prizes

$2,000 in cash prizes: 1st $1,000 · 2nd $500 · 3rd $300 · 4th & 5th $100 each. Top teams get a fast-track to the Apart Fellowship (mentorship, compute, and publication support), plus mentor introductions and a pathway to a publishable write-up. Selected projects may be shared on the Alignment Forum and LessWrong.

No prior background in AI safety or epistemics is required. Several example projects need no ML skills at all. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to scope a tight question. Bring a laptop. A reading list per track is on the sprint's Resources tab.

Important: register for the sprint itself on the Apart Research page as well as signing up here, and choose Saarbrücken as your location, so you're in the team-matching and submission system. This page is for the local Saarbrücken site only.
