This session questions the function, capacities and failures of language in relation to mad, crip and neurodivergent experience.
Meaning in madness doesn’t stay still. It unfolds in motion, in relation - it’s plural, multiple, contingent - reactive, divergent and connective. What is usually unnoticed can vibrate with significance, while human centered hierarchies seem provisional. This “derangement” is dynamic and hard to describe. We’ll consider this difficulty in relation to (and in friction with) language’s historical development, its social and political roles.
Modes of communication that disrupt sense, rationality, logic and order open questions about the origin of these ideals in enlightenment thinking - their entanglement with imperialist, colonial, patriarchal and capitalist values.
If language is a primary system in ordering a version of sanity that enables oppressive violence, what could disordering it do? For example, Lara Sheehi’s project Psychic Militancy, which hacks psychoanalytic education to help patients resist adaptation to the violence of settler occupation.
What effect does pathologizing language have on our inner experience? We’ll trace diagnostic narratives of defectiveness and their role in sustaining maddening conditions like precarity, poverty, poor housing, disability, racism and war.
The germanic root of the word healing is “to make whole”. Who can be considered whole when health is a commodity that is only afforded to a few? We’ll question the cultural conditioning and imprint of biomedicine in the language systems of the Global North, and modalities of expression that exist beyond them.
Blurring between linear structures of communication and sense making, we make space for neuroqueer expression and the EXTRA-lingual! Join us in a realm beyond linguistic and syntactic qualities, searching for the non-verbal and the deemed illegible.. 🎛️📡
