About Chalk it Up!

Chalk it Up is a research seminar series aimed at providing a platform for graduate students to present their research in a low-stakes environment to make interdisciplinary research talks within the biological sciences more accessible to undergraduate students. Traditionally, research seminars are catered towards graduate students, postdocs and faculty, and are quite technical and nuanced; making them inaccessible to individuals without expertise in the domain of the presenter. Distinguished from current initiatives on campus, our seminar series adds the unique element of chalk talks, which require presentations to be concise, engaging, conceptual, and, most importantly, digestible for a broader interdisciplinary audience.

By hosting monthly seminars each having three short (10-15 minutes) chalk talks, focused on communicating science effectively to a broader audience, we aim to serve 2 main purposes:

A) Provide graduate students with a platform to build their science communication skills and through this, expose undergraduate students to the breadth of research conducted by graduate students at UC San Diego.

B) Facilitate mentorship and networking opportunities between graduate and undergraduate students, by hosting “coffee hours” after each session.

These sessions are designed to enhance the accessibility and understanding of UC San Diego's research for undergraduates, thereby aiding them in identifying and developing research interests, or fostering a broader understanding of research areas beyond their specific field. At the same time, we want to provide graduate students with an opportunity to hone their science communication skills in a low-stakes environment, facilitate engagement with the undergraduate community and enhance collaboration across laboratories.
