Tackling the Invisible Climate Risk - Refrigerant Gases and Whitegoods Product Stewardship
Did you know that electronic waste is projected to increase to 674,000 tonnes in 2030, from 521,000 tonnes in 2019, with temperature exchange equipment contributing to 123,000 tonnes of this total?
Join us for an online panel discussion where we delve into the complex nature of product stewardship in Australia, with a particular focus on whitegoods and o-zone depleting refrigerants. This includes the regulatory landscape in Australia, barriers to efficient recovery, and how the low recovery rates of refrigerant-containing appliances, especially refrigerators and freezers, are driving a hidden environmental crisis. The aim of this conversation is to elevate producer responsibility across the product lifecycle, and advocate for stronger value-chain collaboration, better end-of-life management, effective pollutant enforcement and overdue policy reforms to meet net-zero targets and boost circular economy outcomes.
Our expert speakers include:
Alice Kuepper - Head of Sustainability and Industry Impact, Winning Group
Bronwyn Voyce - Founder & CEO of Futures Foundry (formally Civic Futures Lab)
Annie Walker - Senior Coordinator, Circular Economy, Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC)
John Gertsakis - Director, Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence
This conversation will draw on the key findings of two separate reports authored by our speakers, and funded by NSW EPA:
Tackling the Invisible Climate Risk: Reducing Harmful Refrigerant Leakage through Stewardship and Value-Chain Collaboration - Futures Foundry
Stewardship Solutions for Whitegoods – SSROC and Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence, with funding from the EPA.
