Business Lab: Articulating your idea – from research insight to value concept
Have you identified a research insight with potential relevance beyond your field? Translating such insights into something that is clearly understood by others, particularly outside your discipline, can be a challenging but important step in early-stage development.
This lunch seminar is aimed at researchers who want to further articulate and communicate the potential value of their work. The session focuses on approaches to making early-stage ideas more concrete, structured, and accessible to different audiences.
You will be introduced to the NABC framework, originally developed at Stanford Research Institute (SRI), as a tool for structuring how an idea is expressed and understood. The framework supports you in clarifying the problem context, framing your approach in terms of value and impact, and situating your idea in relation to existing alternatives. Particular emphasis will be placed on how you can communicate the relevance of your research in a way that resonates beyond your immediate academic context, without oversimplifying its substance.
During the session, you will:
Reflect on how to articulate the need or problem your research relates to, and who it concerns
Explore ways of framing your approach in terms of potential use and impact
Identify how your idea relates to, and differs from, existing approaches or solutions
Consider how narrative elements, including your underlying motivation, can support clarity and relevance
Lunch will be provided as part of the seminar.
You are welcome to bring an early-stage idea, an ongoing research project, or an interest in how to communicate the value of your work.
This seminar is part of Malmö University’s Business Lab, a series of sessions designed to support researchers in exploring how their work can be further developed in relation to potential use, collaboration, and societal relevance. You can read more about the series here!
