There are some moments in life you never forget.
For me, one of those moments happened on October 7, 2011.
After a painful battle with breast cancer, my Aunt Mary took her final breath while holding my hand. There were three of us in the room with her - her husband, my cousin Francis, and me.
That moment has stayed with me ever since.
On October 8, Pink Apron is my way of turning that loss into something bigger.
This night is for Aunt Mary but it is also for every person whose life has ever been touched by cancer.
For the person fighting right now.
For the survivor who knows what it took to get here.
For the caregiver who stayed strong when someone else couldn't.
For the families and friends who have watched someone they love fight this disease.
And for those of us who have had to say goodbye.
Pink Apron is about bringing all of those people together in one room and reminding each other of something incredibly important:
You are not alone.
On October 8, we are taking over City Hall in Chicago for a night centered around connection, food, community, compassion and purpose.
Yes, this will be a beautiful event.
But I want it to be much more than that.
I want you to walk into Pink Apron and experience the best of humanity.
I want strangers to meet and discover that they understand each other's stories. I want survivors to be celebrated. I want those currently fighting to feel an entire room standing behind them. I want us to remember the people we've lost while doing something meaningful in their honor.
And together, I want us to raise as much money as possible to help fight this disease.
50% of all Pink Apron ticket sales will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society.
So when you purchase a ticket, you're not simply attending an event.
You're helping fund the fight against cancer.
You're showing up for someone who needs to know they're not fighting alone.
You're honoring someone you love.
Maybe you come for your mother.
Your father.
Your sister or brother.
Your spouse.
Your best friend.
Your child.
Maybe you come for yourself.
And maybe, like me, you come for someone who is no longer here.
I'm coming for Aunt Mary.

Because on October 8, I want hundreds of different stories to come together under one roof and become one community.
And when the night is over, my hope is that every person who walks out of City Hall leaves feeling a little more connected, a little more hopeful, and absolutely certain of one thing:
You never have to go through this alone.
This is more than a dinner.
This is Pink Apron.
