The Next Climate Moonshot: Super Pollutants and the Race to Arrest Warming
Methane is one of the fastest major levers available to slow near-term warming. But if slowing warming is the outcome we care about, how do we measure the climate impact of methane action, and which solutions can make a meaningful difference?
XPRIZE is exploring a broader climate moonshot focused on one of the most consequential targets for shifting the trajectory of global warming: super pollutants. A primary prize target is methane, responsible for roughly 30% of human-caused warming and widely recognized as the fastest major lever available to change the near-term warming trajectory.
At New York Climate Week, XPRIZE will bring together leaders in climate science, methane mitigation, measurement, and innovation to explore these questions as we develop an emerging methane prize under a broader super-pollutants ambition.
The program will begin with a brief introduction to XPRIZE’s prize hypothesis, followed by two conversations:
Beyond Emissions: Measuring Near-Term Temperature Impact
One Climate Outcome, Multiple Methane Pathways
These will be fast-moving, moderated discussions with a short opportunity for conversations following. XPRIZE is still shaping the competition; we welcome perspectives that help us sharpen—or challenge—the emerging design.
