The Cornell 7 - How can we turn our outrage into accountability, solidarity and safer societies?

​The Cornell 7 case, alongside other high profile sexual assault cases in India, South Africa and Malaysia, has provoked widespread horror and disbelief. It forces us to ask what it reveals about our society, and why so many comparable cases around the world command public attention without subsequent accountability or recourse to justice. How do we combat what the UN has labelled a 'global epidemic' and how do we keep people in our societies safe?

​Join us for a conversation to ask what accountability looks like and where responsibility lies. What role should governments, platforms, educators and communities play? And how can civil society and philanthropy help build the structures through which accountability and prevention become possible?

​We will also seek to understand the social and cultural forces driving gender-based violence and rape culture. This is not an isolated incident. Similar cases persist across the world, more often in contexts that receive little prominence. We will consider the other drivers at play, including the online spaces and cultures normalising these behaviours and contributing to their prevalence and persistence.

​Through these explorations, we hope to arrive at a call to action around what real accountability requires, how best to support survivors of violence and what actions we can all take to end gender based violence.
