Is the Mind Really Flat, or Is There Something Deeper?
What if everything you think you know about yourself is just a story your brain makes up?
Some psychologists argue that the mind has no hidden depths. No unconscious world waiting to be explored, no stable self beneath our thoughts, just a continuous stream of experiences and explanations we construct as we go.
But what about dreams, intuition, creativity, or those strange moments when we feel connected to something much bigger than ourselves? Are these just tricks of the brain, or do they point to something we don't yet understand?
This month, we'll discuss Stefan Kelly's essay "There's Something Alive Down There" (https://www.alreadyhappened.xyz/p/theres-something-alive-down-there), which explores the unconscious, the nature of the self, and whether our increasingly rational and categorised understanding of reality is making us blind to something essential.
We'll explore questions like: Can introspection actually reveal anything about ourselves? Is consciousness all there is to the mind? Are transcendent experiences meaningful insights or convincing illusions? And has our obsession with explaining everything made us lose our sense of wonder?
Please read the article before attending, as it will be the starting point for our conversation. You don't need any background in philosophy or psychology, just curiosity and a willingness to question your assumptions.
No experts, no slides, no right answers. Just people coming together to think out loud about the strange experience of being conscious.
