Chennai Climate Party | Invasive plants for carbon credits? : Connecting ecology & carbon markets
About The Climate Party
The Climate Party® is building a Scenius - collective genius - for Climate solutions in India.
Climate Parties are a series of immersive learning & ecosystem building events curated to enable interdisciplinary solutionists, either already working in or seriously considering a transition to the Climate space, to discover more of their kind across domains and cross-pollinate ideas for collaborative action.
Our climate parties across 8 cities over the past 2 years have brought together 3500+ diverse Climate stakeholders, from CXOs to students, and culminated in tangible actions.
About the event
Climate change is not only about emissions. It is also about what our landscapes are becoming.
In Chennai and across Tamil Nadu, invasive plant species are spreading like wildfire amidst changing climatic conditions. Plants like Prosopis juliflora and Lantana camara are no longer fringe issues, they
degrade soil and reduce water retention
displace native ecosystems
weaken the ability of landscapes to store carbon
This isn't just a biodiversity problem but our resilience infrastructure eroding in slow motion. It is a systems problem across land, carbon, and finance. The response is not easy. Clearing biomass is costly. Restoration is slow. Carbon markets are still evolving in credibility and scale. The reality is more complex.
In partnership with ProClime, an organization working across carbon projects, carbon credits trading & investments including large-scale projects with governments and farmers, we're exploring
Can invasive species become a usable decarbonization pathway?
From invasive biomass → biochar → carbon credits.
What to expect:
Live “show-and-tell”: invasive plant → biochar → carbon credit
How is biochar made?
Soil system impacts: fertility, water retention, yield
Case study: ProClime’s biochar and land restoration projects in Tamil Nadu
