About Event

OK, you, at least, are on board with the California native gardening mandate (or will take the first step this coming fall planting season); but you see yet another neighbor tearing out their entire front yard and re-landscaping with plants from every faraway continent but ours, i.e., Podocarpus(Asia) for the hedge, wisteria(Asia) on the pergola, roses(Europe) for the walkway, bottlebrush(Australia) to accent the entry.

What an opportunity lost to create a gorgeous California native plant palette that saves water and increases habitat for local wildlife!

These are just two smart reasons to plant native trees, shrubs, and flowers — we will discuss at least another dozen reasons — and you do need to know them for the next time someone brings up replacing a plant in the garden.

Together we can turn the tide and transform/restore this endless “desert” of invasive landscapes into a continuous oasis, where we can live in harmony with nature, among creatures with whom we were meant to share the land.

BONUS TOPIC FOR EXPERIENCED GARDENERS: “20 native plants that look good all summer during the dry, dormant season”— bring your own list to share!

FOR KIDS: Our beloved canyon art teacher Marieke Boorman will lead a nature walk and botanical sketching workshop — kids can discover cool native plants to draw in their very own nature sketchbook(provided)!

FREE FOR EVERY GUEST: A beautiful poster “BUTTERFLIES OF LAUREL CANYON” — illustrated and designed by Jonathan Earl, a longtime Laurel Canyon resident and native plant educator and activist.

RSVP soon, as tickets are limited!

Please note:

  1. This family-friendly workshop will be held outdoors in a sunny native garden, so flat shoes, sunscreen, and hats are recommended.

  2. Save your registration confirmation QR code in a handy spot in your phone for us to scan.

  3. As usual, we will have a table full of informative and inspirational books on California native plants for you to peruse or to purchase.

  4. A limited selection of California native plants will be available that day to adopt for a modest donation.

  5. If you would like to come an hour earlier (2pm), we will be discussing edible gardening - (organic veggies and fruit but not necessarily native 😊) Please give us a heads up on the questionnaire on your event registration email.

Otherwise, see you at 3pm, on Sunday the 4th of June!
