About Event

How has San Francisco consistently ranked among the top 5 bike-friendly U.S. cities, with all the hills and car traffic? Mostly it's because the city's bicyclists organized, expanded their coalition, and won approval for over 500 miles of bikeways.

This tour will explore diverse examples of San Francisco's bike infrastructure. We'll experience through riding and learn from experts what makes the best infrastructure in what contexts. Protected bike lanes? Contraflow bike lanes? Separate bike paths? Shared streets? We'll ride them all.

We'll also hear from the founder and current leaders of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition the inside story of the political battles behind some of these bikeways, including those that impacted drivers' convenience and sparked passionate opposition.

The ride starts and ends at the Baywheels bike station in Harry Bridges Plaza in front of the Ferry Building. It's about 18 miles with no steep hills. We'll ride through SoMA to Mission Bay, then through the Mission to Noe Valley, before taking the Wiggle to Golden Gate Park. We'll return along the Page Street Bicycle Boulevard and (semi-) carfree Market Street.

Free for bona fide members of your local bicycle advocacy organization. $25 for everyone else.

Bring your own bike or you can rent reserve a rental ahead of time: $40 for a regular bike or $75 for an e-bike.
