About Event

Get on your bike and go birding with us this May! Let’s take our bikes on a slow stroll through the Anacostia Trail and Kingman Island. We’ll be making frequent stops to experience birding sights along the way, with a longer stop to walk around Kingman Island. Afterwards, folks are free to join us at the Roost for lunch.

Registration will open on 5/3/26.

Meeting Location:

We will be meeting at the green space by the southern entrance of the Stadium-Armory Metro Station near 19th street SE and Burke St SE at 9:30 AM. The address is 150 19th St SE, Washington, DC 20003. There are no public parking lots for the Metro Station. NOTE: This station also has  a northern entrance. Parking is limited to residential parking and the lots at RFK. If possible, we recommend taking public transport (e.g. the blue, orange, or silver metro lines) or biking to the meeting location.

The Stadium-Armory Metro Station is serviced by the Orange, Silver, and Blue lines. The meeting location is serviced by an elevator if you need to bring your bike on the metro. There is a CaBi Station on the corner of 19 St SE and C St SE.

What to bring: water, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable shoes, a bike helmet, a bike lock (if bringing your own bike), and binoculars. Bring your own bike or rent a CaBi. This ride will be limited to 6-8 miles per hour. Other forms of non-motorized self-transport (ebikes, scooters, skateboards, e-wheelchairs, etc.) are also welcome!

Who is This Ride For?

This ride will be accessible for all experience levels of biking and birding. This will be a no-drop ride, which means that group leaders will lead and tail (sweep) the group to ensure we are not separated. We will maintain a casual biking pace (no more than 8 miles per hour) and will make occasional stops to bird and enjoy the trails. Before we start biking the group leaders will give the group a 101 on group riding practices so we can travel safely. The bicycle portion of the ride will be roughly 3.25 miles long, excluding any bicycle travel you take before and after the ride.

The Route:

Start

We will leave Stadium-Armory Metro station north on 19th St SE then turn right onto Independence Ave SE from where we will access a separated bike path to take us to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. The roads to the trail do not have protected bike lanes. From the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail we will head north and park at the Kingman and Heritage Islands Park. There is a CaBi station and ample bike parking at the park. We will park our bikes before heading to Kingman Park.

Kingman Park

We will walk the boardwalk to Heritage Island then Kingman Island. The trail begins as a paved path and transitions to wood boardwalk to unpaved trail back to wood boardwalk to paved trail. The path from start to finish is about 0.5 miles. This sort of walk typically takes FBC DMV at least an hour to complete, due to frequent stops to take a look at our local bird friends.

Anacostia River Trail

After we finish Kingman Park, we will get on our bikes and head south along the Anacostia River Trail. Along the trail there are 3 turnoffs that we can take that overlook the Anacostia River and provide places to break and bird.

The Roost

We will leave the Anacostia River Trail at Barney Circle and take the protected bike lane along Kentucky Ave SE. We will turn left onto Potomac Ave SE and end the ride at the Potomac Ave Metro Station. From there we can park our bikes and end the ride at The Roost, for those who are interested in having lunch together. There is a CaBi Station to dock bikes along the 1300 block of Potomac Ave SE. There are bike racks outside of the Roost on 14 St SE and Penn Ave SE. NOTE: There is road construction occurring in this area, so walking is the safe alternative when we reach our location.

Leaving the Ride

The Potomac Ave Metro Station is a short distance from The Roost, which is one stop away from the Stadium-Armory Metro Station. You can reach the station by bike by taking Potomac Ave SE northeast and turning left on 19th St SE to reach the station.

Outing Leaders:

For this trip, Lauren (pronouns: she/her) and Jordan (pronouns: they/she) will serve as the outing leaders.

  • Lauren (pronouns: she/her) bikes whenever possible, and is always delighted whenever those bike rides involve a surprise visit from birds.

  • Jordan (pronouns: they/she) prefers to get around DC on bike as much as possible, especially to go birding! They like how biking and birding are complimentary ways of getting outside and experiencing nature.

Point of Contact:

If you need to get in contact with us day-of, please use “Contact Host” on the event page or email us directly ([email protected]).

Code of Conduct:

Please read the FBC DMV Code of Conduct prior to the event if you haven't already. This Code of Conduct is meant to explicitly place our principles into practice, lay out what behavior is and is not acceptable from our members, participants, and our leaders, and detail how we will work to enforce those principles.

Liability Waiver:

Please sign the liability waiver here and bring it with you to the event. If you aren't able to sign and bring it with you, no worries! We will also have copies.

Why a liability waiver? We are not a registered non-profit, and as such do not have liability insurance. This is our version of insurance for our outing leaders.

Other Important Info:

  • Water and Sunscreen - Bring and drink water during the outing to stay hydrated, consider wearing sunscreen, and check the weather to make sure you have enough layers to stay warm. Bring enough water for the ride between Stadium Armory and The Roost.

  • Binoculars and bird identification books are not necessary, but you are welcome to bring them. We'll have extra binoculars to lend out and a couple bird ID books/apps to share for figuring out what birds we see and/or hear.

  • Bike Safety and Mechanical - Please bring a helmet for the ride and if you are bringing your own bike/ride ensure that your bike/ride is maintained and capable of covering the 3.25 miles of the ride. There are no bike repair stations or shops near the outing route. The outing leaders will have some mechanical knowledge, but will not be able to replace parts, tubes, etc. If you are bringing an ebike or other electric transpo please ensure it is charged for the ride!

  • Masks are not required, but we ask everyone to physically distance and to wear a mask if they need or want to.

  • If you are under 18 years old, you must be accompanied by an adult to partake in the event.

If you have any questions, have any accessibility needs, or have any other thoughts, please reach out to us. We truly want to hear from you and want everyone to be able to feel bird joy to the fullest 🙂
