Love as Generational Wealth (Sowing Seeds series, Part 1)
WELCOME TO SOWING SEEDS
Caught yourself slippin’ on those 2026 resolutions?
It’s OK, fam. Not only is the news cycle chaotic, but winter is for restoration – not for hustling.
Ground yourself and ease into your goals during Black Joy: Behind the Scenes’ “Sowing Seeds” web series. Just as a farmer plants seeds into nutrient-rich soil, veteran journalist Starr Dunigan and her village of Black wellness experts, spirit-led creatives and community care practitioners are giving you the “seeds” of ancestral knowledge. That way, by the time the weather warms up and growth begins after the Spring Equinox on March 20, you will have what you need to manifest your dreams throughout the year.
And the best part? All of the proceeds generated from ticket sales will be donated to four organizations who empower and inspire Black communities. So not only are we sowing into you, but you’re also sowing back into our community.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The revolution doesn’t happen in isolation! Ancestors in Training™ curator Veronica Agard helps us explore what collective liberation work and love for each other looks like when we learn from ancestral traditions and organizing practices.
All proceeds from this $10 event will be donated to the Lakou Tanama project, which is bringing healing circles to folks on the ground in Haiti. The project was created by In Cultured Company, an education and leadership development organization ending legacies of conflict between Haitians and Dominicans through social, racial, and economic justice initiatives.
What you will get out of this:
Tips on how to build your own ancestral altar
A list of ways to connect with your ancestors while you’re goals for the year
Your own copy of the “Writing with the Ancestors” journal
A roadmap on how you can help contribute to collective liberation while practicing radical self care
Things you will need:
A journal
Pictures or names of ancestors you would like to bring into the space
Take note before you RSVP:
Slides and recording will be available after the event.
This event is specially for Black people. Appreciate our allies understanding this decision!
MEET THE SOWERS
Veronica Agard (Ifáṣadùn Fásanmí) (she/her) is a poet, writer, community educator, and connector at the intersections of Black identity, wellness, representation, and culture. She experiments with creative healing modalities and puts theories learned into practice. She curated the Who Heals the Healer series and the conference of the same name, and facilitates the Ancestors in Training™ educational project. A joy defender and space holder for over 10 years, she wants to be remembered as a force of nature who created sites of healing. Veronica’s debut book, Ancestors in Training: An Abọ̀rìṣà’s Guide to Lineage Work, Healing Praxis, and Black Diasporic Memory, is out next year with North Atlantic Books.
Starr Dunigan (She/her/hers) is a veteran journalist who has spent the past nine years chronicling the different ways Black people continue the practice of cultivating liberative Black joy in their lives. During her days as a night reporter, she received a question from a Black woman: Why do you only come when we are dead? That concern sparked a series of articles illustrating how people were using their own "Black magic" (their skills, talents, etc.) to improve their neighborhoods. That project has since evolved into
Black Joy Behind the Scenes: a community-centered media brand empowering readers across the African diaspora through storytelling and events.
