Humanity’s Message to the Stars: The Voyager Golden Record for Our Time
Dr. Jonathan H. Jiang will present a seminar on Humanity’s Message to the Stars and the effort to develop a contemporary update to the spirit of NASA’s Voyager Golden Record. The presentation will explore how science, art, culture, and philosophy can come together to ask one of humanity’s deepest questions: what message should we send to the future, to the cosmos, and to ourselves?
The talk will also discuss the broader mission of the Golden Record Update: not only as an interstellar message, but also as a way to inspire reflection on humanity’s shared values, our future as a civilization, and the importance of building a more peaceful, wise, and responsible world.
Bios
Dr. Jonathan H. Jiang is President of BEACON Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to Humanity’s Message to the Stars and the Golden Record Update, an effort to reimagine the legacy of NASA’s Voyager Golden Record for our time.
Prior to leading BEACON Initiative, Dr. Jiang spent more than 25 years as a manager and Senior Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. His scientific work spans Earth and space sciences, astrophysics, planetary atmospheres, exoplanets, and the search for life beyond Earth. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 publications and has received multiple NASA honors, including NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals, the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, and the Edward Stone Award.
Through HMTS and BEACON Initiative, Dr. Jiang is working to connect science, culture, education, and public imagination in service of a larger goal: helping humanity reflect on who we are, what we value, and what kind of future we wish to build.
