What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese word that means “Universal Life Force Energy” which is the pure, positive energy that is within us and around us. Reiki is a natural, powerful, safe and gentle healing art that helps to bring a balanced state to a person’s mind, body and spirit. Reiki practitioners act as a conduit through which the Reiki energy travels through their hands. Reiki is being used today in clinics and hospitals all over the world to support health and wellness.
What is Reiki used for?
Reiki is widely recommended for lack of energy, stress reduction, pain relief, strengthening of the immune system, improved sleep, better digestion, less anxiety and depression, recovery from surgery, abuse and trauma, relief from disease-related symptoms, and the side effects of medical treatment.
How distant is too distant?
When you receive an in-person treatment, sometimes the practitioner’s hands are touching the body, and sometimes they are held just above the body. The question is: how far away can the practitioner hold their hands before the Reiki stops flowing? The answer is Reiki continues to flow at any distance. No distance is too far. Like Hawayo’s test with the Native Americans, no physical contact is required when the practitioner knows how to conduct a distant treatment. For Western practitioners, this is taught at a Level 2 training.
Setting a time to experience your distant Reiki session
Distant Reiki can either sent at a pre-arranged time or when the recipient is going about their day. The benefits of arranging a specific time for a treatment is that the recipient can be fully present during the experience and is more likely to pick up on the often subtle sensations that arise during a session.
What people experience during a distant Reiki session
What people experience during a distant Reiki session is not so different from what people experience during an in-person session. By far the most common experience is a feeling of relaxation and peace. People often fall asleep. A lot of people experience a tingling sensation, temperature changes, or feelings of calm or joy. Some even see swirls of color with their eyes closed. However, it’s best not to have any expectation of what you might experience and just let things unfold as they will.
Preparing for a session
A distant treatment requires very little from the recipient. If you have a pre-arranged appointment time, as I do with my clients, all you need do at your appointment time is to get comfortable in a quiet spot where you can be undisturbed for 30 min to an hour. Either sit in a comfy chair or lay down and be open to experience whatever happens. I encourage my clients to set an intention before the session starts. For example, you could say to yourself: ” I am open to experience this distant Reiki session with Alina and receive the maximum benefits.”
During a session
Once the distant Reiki session starts, you may start feeling different sensations. Warmth, tingling, and pulsing sensations are common, as is falling asleep. In fact, falling asleep is so common I recommend having an alarm set for after the session is complete so you don’t sleep through an important later event. Unless, of course, you’ve booked your session to coincide with your bedtime.
After your session
Most people feel calm, relaxed, refreshed, or just sleepy after their session. I encourage my clients to practice good self-care after their session, like drinking plenty of water, eating healthy food, and taking time to rest and reflect. I also encourage people to write down any experiences they had during and after the session.
What are the benefits of several sessions?
Just like meditation or movement arts, the effects of Reiki are cumulative. While one session may work wonders, repeated treatments may be beneficial. Regular Reiki sessions support overall well-being in every way.
Can Reiki “cure” me?
Reiki is a complementary methodology that works well alone as well as in concert with other treatments and body-mind practices. Healing is often the result of gentle shifts in awareness, release of emotional patterns, achievement of new understanding, and daily practice. Reiki is not a replacement for traditional medical treatment.
Is there any way to have too much Reiki?
Absolutely not! There is no way to do this wrong. It’s just energy. The body takes in what it needs. The practitioner is merely a vessel that allows the energy to flow towards you to do what it needs to do. Think of it as directing a laser beam to the places that need the most attention. Everything is always for your highest and best good out of pure light and love.
