Int/a Speaker Series #4: 'The Dao of Complexity: Perspectives on Altruism' with Jean Boulton

​Is altruism an orientation, an intention, or an inquiry? Is it contextual or universal? And does it reside in the action or the intended goal? 

​Jean Boulton will consider these and other questions through perspectives gleaned from complexity science and Daoism. She asks what it means for practice, and considers how our imagination and viscerally-informed intuition play a role in a dialogue between altruism and the emerging future. 

​Jean studied physics before turning to management and the social sciences. She has an international reputation for her contribution to the science of complexity and its implications for the social world – leadership, personal development, sustainability and economics. She is keenly interested in global futures and transformational change, engages in local politics and place-based initiates and links this to our personal ‘cultivation’ and the centrality of relationships and ethics. Her recent book is The Dao of Complexity (2024:De Gruyter).
