Hyphen Special: Building a portfolio career with Mike Omoniyi

Mike Omoniyi has never had one job. He has been an athlete, a backing vocalist for artists with Grammys on their shelves, a philosophy postgraduate, a self-taught web designer who learned because hiring one was too expensive, a media founder, a studio owner and the leader of a Christian organisation. For most of his twenties he was told this was a problem he would eventually need to fix.

It was not a problem. It was the strategy.

The portfolio career gets sold badly. People hear the phrase and picture someone juggling five freelance gigs and answering emails at midnight, or a LinkedIn headline with four slashes in it and no substance behind any of them. Done properly, it is a deliberate structure where each thing you do makes the other things stronger, cheaper or more possible.

In this masterclass Mike takes us through how he built his, including the parts that did not work. He'll cover how to choose the two or three pursuits that compound rather than compete, how to fund a portfolio career in the early years when nothing is paying properly yet, how to build a skills stack that makes you difficult to replace, how to sequence commitments so you are not permanently exhausted, and how to position yourself so other people can explain what you do in one sentence.

Bring questions. The final section belongs to the room.

This is for anyone building more than one thing at once, or anyone who suspects they should be and hasn't worked out how yet.
