About Event

From Roots to Wings 🦋

An Indigenous parenting program for parents, grandparents, kinship and foster caregivers, and everyone who walks beside children and families.

Every child begins in connection. Somewhere along the way, many of us were never shown how to hold a child's big feelings, because no one held ours.

The Kamamak Way is an Indigenous parenting program. In this foundational day, we learn through Indigenous teachings and story, in a space where everyone is safe, seen, and heard. Marian Paul created it from lived experience, community teachings, and over 40 years of working with families. Marian is Métis, a grandmother, a kinship foster parent, and a knowledge gatherer. Many people know her as Tante.

Over one day, together we will:

  • Sit with the teachings of connection, the tree, antennas, crying and receiving

  • Look at behaviour and tantrums through a different lens

  • Talk honestly about discipline, where it comes from, and how it can become teaching

  • End with the Penny Teaching and a closing sharing circle

This day is for parents, grandparents, and kinship and foster caregivers, plus teachers, frontline workers and anyone who walks beside children and families. You don't need any background. Come as you are.

What to expect: story and reflection, not a lecture. There are two optional paired conversations, and you can always pass. This is education, not therapy. Support lines are shared at the start, and a support person will be there throughout. The day is not recorded.

Cameras on, please. This is how we keep each other safe and seen, because the topics can be triggering, and it lets the facilitators check in if something comes up. A certificate of attendance is given only to people whose camera stays on for the whole day. If a weak connection or a space that is not private makes this hard, please contact us before the day and we will work it out together.

Bring: a quiet space if you can find one, coffee, tea or water, and paper and a pen.

Time: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Winnipeg and Eastern time. That is 10:30 am to 5:00 pm in Atlantic Canada, 8:30 am to 3:00 pm in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and 7:30 am to 2:00 pm in British Columbia. In the US: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern, 8:30 am to 3:00 pm Central, and 6:30 am to 1:00 pm Pacific.

Schedule (Winnipeg time): 9:30 opening, 11:00 break, 12:30 lunch, 1:30 afternoon teachings, 2:45 break, 3:00 Penny Teaching and closing sharing circle, 4:00 close.

Tickets: $97 per person, or choose the sliding scale at $50. All prices are in Canadian dollars, tax included. Free community seats are available by request. No one is turned away for what they can pay.
