Beyond the Sequence

Ashtanga, tradition & the practice of knowing yourself

What if a yoga practice could be more than a sequence of postures?

For thousands of years, yoga has offered different ways of working with the body, breath, attention and mind, not simply to become better at Asana, but to explore the nature of our experience and our relationship with ourselves.

Ashtanga Yoga comes from a living lineage with deep roots in the broader traditions of yoga. It is known today for its disciplined practice, breath-led movement, fixed sequences and challenging postures. But beneath the physical practice lies a much bigger question:

What can yoga teach us about ourselves?

In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll explore Ashtanga through the lens of both tradition and lived experience: where the practice comes from, how it has evolved, and what we might discover when we use its physical practice as a way of exploring ourselves.

We’ll begin with the lineage and history of Ashtanga and the ideas that have shaped the practice. We’ll look at some of the common assumptions surrounding Ashtanga and distinguish between what comes from older yoga traditions, what emerged through the modern lineage, and how the practice is understood today.

Then we’ll move from understanding into experience.

Through a guided, accessible Ashtanga-inspired practice, we’ll use the body as a place of inquiry. Rather than focusing on achieving postures, We’ll explore breath, movement, gaze, stillness and attention as tools for self-observation. Not as rules to follow perfectly, but as invitations to notice.

After the practice, we’ll come back together for reflection, conversation and integration. We’ll consider what it might mean to take something from an inherited tradition and make it meaningful in our own lives.

What to expect

This workshop is for you if…

* You’re curious about Ashtanga but have little or no experience with it

* You already practice Ashtanga and want to explore the practice beyond the physical sequence

* You’re interested in the relationship between yoga, tradition and modern life

* You want to explore movement as a way of understanding yourself

* You’re curious about how an inherited tradition can remain meaningful in a contemporary context

* You’re interested in experiencing rather than simply learning about yoga

No previous Ashtanga experience is required.

You don't need to be flexible, strong or familiar with the Primary Series. Experienced practitioners are equally welcome.

This isn't a workshop about getting further into the sequence.
