Join San Diego Green Drinks and Ocean Optimism to talk about positive ocean stories and launch the podcast's third season! Green Drinks events are an opportunity to meet with fellow environmental and ocean enthusiasts and join the growing San Diego sustainability community.
Join Ellen Spooner in a compelling presentation on the Ocean Optimism movement: a transformative approach in marine conservation. This talk will explore how Ocean Optimism is changing the narrative from despair to hope by emphasizing solutions, successes, and connections in marine environments. We'll delve into how the movement counters the prevalent 'doom and gloom' stories in ocean news, instead shining a light on positive developments and progress in marine conservation.
A key highlight of this presentation will be a case study on California’s Marine Protected Areas. We'll examine how these areas serve as a beacon of success and an example of effective marine management. By looking at the tangible results achieved in California, we'll see how Ocean Optimism is not just a concept but a reality in action.
This session is designed to ignite hope and inspire the next generation of environmental thinkers and change-makers. It's an invitation to shift from documenting decline to celebrating success and to be part of a movement that believes in a sustainable and thriving future for our oceans. About Green Drinks:
San Diego Green Drinks (SDGD) is a monthly networking group for professionals or individuals interested in the sustainability field. We typically meet on the third Thursday of each month at a local bar to discuss different environmental issues with a speaker followed by open networking. These events are casual, drinking is optional, and anyone interested is encouraged to attend.
About Ellen Spooner:
Ellen Spooner is a marine scientist turned storyteller with a rich background in ocean science and communication. Having initially worked for NOAA and the Smithsonian, Ellen has now transitioned to a role as Communications Manager at the Waitt Institute. The Waitt Institute is known for its collaborative efforts with island nations to establish and maintain marine protected areas. She's also the host of the Ocean Optimism podcast. Ellen's academic journey includes studying Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona, followed by a Masters in Fisheries from the University of Michigan. In 2016, she was honored with the prestigious Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, marking the beginning of her significant contributions in Government Ocean Science and Communication.
