Join us to launch our new white paper, Wisdom and Wanting What's Good: Collective wisdom for a time of crisis and renewal - the sixth paper in the Second Renaissance series, and Part 1 of two papers on wisdom.
Modernity has staged a heist: the field of legitimate knowledge has been stripped of all that's good and beautiful, leaving only what can be measured. No wonder we've forgotten to trust our inner compass - what use is wisdom when the only admissible civic choices concern how much and how many? Neglected and under-cultivated, our innate faculty of wisdom is weak, but it isn't extinct. Our future depends on reviving it.
The paper frames wisdom as a practical, collective capacity, made of three interwoven strands: sensing what matters, understanding how things are and what would work, and the will to act on what we discern.
In this roundtable we'll explore questions such as:
Why has modern society grown so distrustful of wisdom and intuitive judgement?
Can we sense what's good - and can we trust that sense?
Where does our collective will fail, even when we know what to do?
How might societies recognise and empower wise decision-makers?
This is also an opportunity to hear from the paper's authors as well as invited experts in wisdom, sensemaking and social transformation.
