Community centric: delivering healthcare closer to home

​The Government is committed to creating a community-centric, preventative and future-fit health and care system, better able to meet the needs of the population in the coming years. One year on from the publication of the 10 Year Health Plan, new Integrated Care Board footprints are being implemented, pilot neighbourhood health centres are underway, and the Government's Neighbourhood health framework is providing greater clarity on the national vision. But it is vital this momentum and progress continues.

​Delivering a community-centric system, with care closer to home, will require collaboration throughout the health system, as well as with local government, the voluntary sector, and industry. Embracing innovation and enabling the wider primary care ecosystem is also essential. For example, recent commitments to reform community pharmacy services, through developments such as independent prescribing, have highlighted the sector's potential to support to this agenda. As these changes take shape, this is a vital moment to explore the future role of community pharmacy and what is valued most from community-centric systems.
