About Event

Fungal Futures is a hands-on community workshop series exploring fungi, native wetland ecologies, and the future of ecological restoration along New York City’s waterfronts. Through collective learning, material experimentation, and planting, the series invites participants to imagine new possibilities of urban stewardship grounded in local care, biodiversity, and environmental repair.

In this second workshop, participants will explore the layered history of Bushwick Inlet Park, the community-led struggle to reclaim and protect the waterfront, and the ecological importance of urban wetlands within New York City. Together, we’ll learn about mycelium, bioremediation, and the role native marsh plants play in filtering water, stabilizing shorelines, and creating habitat for both human and more-than-human life.

During low tide, participants will help plant native Spartina alterniflora marsh grass as part of an ongoing effort to rewild the Brooklyn waterfront and support local biodiversity at Bushwick Inlet Park. Expect a collaborative afternoon of planting, conversation, and ecological learning at the water’s edge. Since we’ll be working along the shore, we strongly encourage comfy clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty or wet!

No prior experience needed! Just curiosity and a willingness to get your hands dirty. All backgrounds are welcome.

This workshop is facilitated by Luca Marcelli and Valeria Ramirez in collaboration with Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park, BIOPOD Co., and North Brooklyn Parks.
