Stewarding Complexity: Session 3 - Agency in Impossible Systems

What do you do when the system around you runs on command and control — and you know that isn't working?"

Most organizations are still governed by a control logic — defined hierarchies, top-down decisions, narrow mandates. For many leaders, the honest question isn't how to redesign the system. It's how to act with agency and and shape power within one that seems impossible to change.

This session explores the practical intelligence of working within constraint: how power actually moves through institutions, where agency lives even without authority, and what it means to steward toward something better when it feels … impossible.

What we'll explore together

  • How to map formal and informal power — who actually shapes decisions, and how information really flows

  • The difference between authority and influence, and why one is often more useful than the other

  • Where agency lives in a constrained system — the edges, relationships, and conditions you can shape without formal control

  • How control-oriented cultures can be nudged from within, and what that actually requires

  • The personal cost of operating in misaligned systems, and how to make deliberate choices about it

This session is for board members, senior executives, and change leaders — especially those operating in large organizations, legacy institutions, or government bodies where the culture hasn't caught up to the complexity you're navigating every day.

Stewarding Complexity is a private, confidential peer space for organizational leaders. Sessions are kept small and focused — designed for honest conversation, not performance. No performative certainty. No pressure to already have the answer.
