Pizza & Robes

​Somewhere in East Austin, a disco ball is spinning. Anyone who's been there knows exactly what it means: the gate is open, the candles are lit, and Chloe's already decided tonight is one of those nights.

​You knock. Nobody rushes to answer because nobody's worried about who's at the door. Half the room's been waiting all day to wear that robe out of the house, robe on since noon, fully committed to the theme. The other half's in yesterday's t-shirt, having ignored the memo entirely and won somehow. Somebody clearly tried and won't admit it. Nobody's checking.

​Inside, it hits you before you see it, the smell of dough working in a hot oven, cheese starting to bubble at the edges. Someone's defending pineapple with real conviction. There's at least three conversations about agentic something-or-other happening at any given time. Dominoes slam on the table, and it's already more competitive than it has any right to be. A side group gallops off to a bedroom to find a quiet space to gossip. A dozen people who'll be closer by midnight are pulling slices off the same board like it's the only correct way to eat.

​Nobody's on their phone. It's a warm one tonight, and the pool glows blue, daring someone to test the water.

​This is the part nobody plans for and everybody remembers. Not a party, exactly. Just your people, a house, hot pizza and cold drinks, a game with rules nobody agreed to, and that specific feeling of being fully here while some part of you is already looking back on it.
